Geopressure Data & Studies

Learn more about Geopressure Data & Studies
Assess and reduce risk associated with high pressure, high temperature regions

The Geopressure Database from S&P Global is one of the most comprehensive, accessible and up-to-date geopressure databases in the world. It provides immediate and accurate subsurface data so geoscientists, drillers and engineers can make informed decisions and stay competitive.

Pressure data can be used to assess and reduce risk associated with hydrocarbon prospectivity, reservoir connectivity and entrapment, whilst utilizing key information to decide whether to acquire or drop acreage in areas of highly variable pressures and water depths. It allows safe decision making in well design and planning where a full understanding of the subsurface pressure regime is key. With up to 90% of unpredicted downtime in highly pressured areas being due to overpressure, the S&P Global geopressure data saves time, money and increases safety.

Key benefits:

  • Data standardization allows accurate comparison of wells
  • Over 30 man-years of data sourcing, processing and expert re-interpretation
  • Identification of pressure gradients and fluid contacts
  • Standardization of pressure units and hole temperature correction
  • Sourcing and cataloguing of additional down-hole, pressure related events
  • Reinterpretation and quality control of formation test pressures by in-house experts

Pressure data applications across Industry – from Geoscience, Exploration and Appraisal to Well Engineering and Safety Planning.

Regional Geopressure Distribution and Trends

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) is a term originally used to define wells encountering pressures in excess of 10,000 psi and 280°F ( 690 Bar and 150°C) this has now been further extended to encompass Extreme HPHT >14500 PSI, 330°F (1000 Bar, 165°C) and Ultra HPHT > 19500 PSI, 365°F (1350 Bar, 185°C) drilling environments.

Additionally deeper water plays have been chased leading to smaller drilling window and requiring an enhanced understanding of the subsurface pressure regime.

This Infographic illustrates these trends using data from the S&P Global Formation Pressure Database.

Geopressure Data Deliverables

The Geopressure database currently covers the following regions: Norway, United Kingdom, Ireland, US Gulf of Mexico, Netherlands, Denmark and Australia.

Pressure records are created using public well data sourced via government channels, e.g. OGA, NPD, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement or through data exchange agreements with oil companies.

HPHT Zones with Key fields

Well Classification
  • Class 'A' well - contains formation pressures derived from WFT/FTWD, DSTs and operator reported kicks. These wells may be supplemented with fracture pressure data from FIT/LOT or LC and/or tor reported mud weights.
  • Class 'B' well - contains fracture pressure data from FIT/LOT/XLOT or LC events and may be supplemented with mud pressures from operator reported mud weights.
  • Class 'C' well - contains mud pressures from operator reported mud weights.
Database Attributes
  • Well header
  • Formation pressure (wireline, while drilling, DST, kick event)
  • Fracture pressure (integrity, leak off, lost circulation)
  • Drilling mud weights
  • Temperature
  • Formation water salinities
  • Gas events (connection gas, trip gas, formation gas)
  • Drilling comments
  • Casing and liner
  • Formation tops
Pressure Studies
S&P Global, in association with IKON Science, have undertaken a number of studies in Norway, UK and US GoM. Utilizing the pressure database in conjunction with other key datasets they analyze and map regional formation pressure distribution and prediction. These studies provide key insights into hydrocarbon migration, reservoir quality, trap integrity and fault sealing capacity helping to decrease prospect drilling risk and increasing exploration success.
