This report covers the following styrenic copolymer and terpolymer products:
- Styrenic block copolymers (SBC elastomers)
- High-styrene content styrene-butadiene copolymer (HS-SBC) resins
- Styrene-acrylic ester copolymers
- Ion exchange resins (IER, styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers)
- Weatherable styrenic copolymers (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate [ASA] and acrylonitrile-EPDM-styrene [AES])
- Methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS)
- Styrene–maleic anhydride (SMA)
- Acrylonitrile-chlorinated polyethylene-styrene (ACS)
This report does not include the larger-volume styrene derivatives and products such as polystyrene (general purpose, high impact, and expandable), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer resin, styrene-butadiene latex, styrene-butadiene elastomer, and unsaturated polyester resins.
The following chart shows world consumption of styrenic copolymers by type:
Mainland China continues to be the largest market for styrenic copolymers, accounting for 45% of world consumption in 2019 and 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting government-ordered lockdowns have led to a global recession affecting every region in the world in 2020; the aftereffects have also affected styrenic copolymer/products markets. All styrenic copolymers consumption applications and markets are expected to decline in 2020, with a rebound and stabilization of all styrenic copolymers consumption following in mid-2021, as an effective and meaningful treatment will have become available in terms of a widely available vaccine against the COVID-19 virus. The aggregate consumption of all styrenic copolymers is forecast to increase by about 2–3% per year during 2019–25.
