Propylene is the second-largest-volume primary petrochemical produced globally. It is an important raw material for the production of organic chemicals such as polypropylene, acrylonitrile, propylene oxide and oxo alcohols, as well as for a large variety of industrial products. Global consumption of propylene will continue to grow during 2022–27, driven primarily by the developing markets in Asia, particularly mainland China. Propylene consumption varies by region, based on the development of downstream derivative capacity. The following chart shows consumption of propylene by major region:
With fast-growing global requirements, on-purpose propylene facilities continue to be developed to supplement the traditional production routes (ethylene crackers and refineries). Changes in fuel consumption, evolving mobility trends and changing cracker feed are projected to modify the propylene production pattern in the medium and long term.
Partially protected by some key pandemic-related demand trends in 2020, polypropylene is projected to continue to be the dominant outlet for propylene, and its overall share of the global propylene market will expand further through 2026. Other applications such as propylene oxide, cumene, and acrylonitrile will further recover from a gloomy 2020 and grow, each with their own specific regional dynamics. Uncertainties brought about by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and associated international sanctions, an escalating trade dispute between the United States and mainland China, and economic and security concerns in certain regions have cast a shadow over the global economy. Against this backdrop, propylene demand will continue to grow, fueled primarily by the further economic development of emerging countries.
