Well Test Interpretation
  • Length: 3 days, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • Summary: This oil and gas training course will cover the reasons for well testing and the information that can be derived from it. The procedures and principles for analyzing vertical well tests will also be applied to horizontal wells. The course will deal with oil, gas & water (applicable to geothermal water phase) well test interpretation, drillstem tests, wireline formation tests, production tests, interference tests, detection of boundaries, estimation of stabilized flow rates from short test, etc. The practice of well test interpretation will be emphasized over the theory. Data validation and the Primary Pressure Derivative (PPD) will be used to illustrate wellbore dynamics and to extricate these effects from the apparent reservoir response. Throughout the course, the instructor will show that Well Test Interpretation (WTI) involves a lot more than simply Pressure Transient Analysis (PTA)
  • Prerequisites: A desire to learn the art of Well Test analysis
  • Topics:
    • Introduction – Why test, course philosophy, types of tests, fluid types, reservoir types, well test interpretation approaches
    • Basic concepts – Simplifying assumptions, drawdown/injection test, typecurves, skin effect, wellbore storage
    • Gas flow considerations – Turbulence, pseudo-pressure, pseudo-time
    • Flow regimes – Vertical wells: segmented approach, early time (wellbore storage), transient flow (radial), late time (transition)
    • Flow regimes – Horizontal well
    • Useful concepts – Radius of investigation, time to stabilization, superposition
    • Drawdown analysis (or injection) – Procedure, specialized analyses, horizontal wells
    • Buildup analysis – Horner plot, equivalent time, M.D.H. plot, average reservoir pressure, detection of boundaries, other buildup curves, D.S.T., horizontal wells
    • Non-reservoir effects – Data validation, wellbore dynamics, primary pressure derivative (PPD)
    • Production forecasting and analysis – Transient/stabilized IPR, AOF (sandface/wellhead), production data analysis
    • Test design, complex models, pitfalls, etc.
  • This course is available through SPE and to in-house groups on request. Please contact us for more information
