Ever since the mid-thirties, vinyl acetate (VA) has been an important monomer for producing several kinds of polymers: polyvinyl acetate, poly-vinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetals, etc. This report is concerned with the cost and technology of manufacture of vinyl acetate. Vinyl acetate from acetylene has been the main process for years, and is still an important process. In recent years, processes for making vinyl acetate from ethylene have been developed, and the trend is in favor of this new development. Of the numerous patented processes using ethylene for making vinyl acetate, two processes already in production or under construction and another two processes having unique features have been chosen for evaluation. There are several processes making vinyl acetate from materials other than acetylene, ethylene, and acetic acid, but most of them are not commercially economic.
