This report has two parts: Part A deals with the technology and economics of producing and transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG); Part B (Section 8 of this report) does the same for methyl fuel (a crude methanol).
The rapidly dwindling natural gas supplies in the United States, and the demand for clean burning fuels in Japan and in Europe have created a market for the largely unused natural gas available in the Middle East, North Africa, and other oil production sites. Liquefying the natural gas or converting it into methanol provides the volume reduction necessary for economic ocean transport.
The LNG part of this report covers the liquefaction, transportation, and regasification of natural gas. The production and gathering of natural gas, as well as the removal of natural gas liquids, is outside the scope of this report.
