This report reviews the technology and economics of manufacturing foamed polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and phenolics. After polyurethanes, the first three of these (all thermoplastics) are the largest volume plastic foams. Phenolic resins, which are thermosets, are interesting as insulating foams because of their rigidity and their price/performance, which is equal to that of glass fiber.

The scope of the report does not include polyurethanes and nonstructural polystyrene. Polyurethanes are discussed in Process Economics Program (PEP) Reports 10C, 10B, 10A, and 10 and polystyrene foams in PEP Reports 39B and 39A.
