This report presents an update of recent major market and technology developments for the production of anionic surfactant products used in powder and liquid household detergents. Demand, supply, and production capacities of principal producers are summarized for industralized world regions. Also, process economics are presented for linear alkylbenzene sulfonates, alpha olefin sulfonates, and alcohol ether sulfates.
The basic sulfonation process alternatives previously reported in PEP Report 59A, Aliphatic Surfactants, have not changed. However, a relatively new process for the integrated production of ethoxylated alcohols and alcohol ether sulfates is presented in this report. In addition, waste treatment operations are included in our process designs, along with a listing of residual effluent discharges.
Our current report will be useful as an initial information resource for those who may be considering entering or expanding into the anionic surfactants business, and as a reference resource for competitive analysis of existing producers.
